This is the first ever stage play to examine the two main romances in the life of Edward 8th, the second of which resulted in the abdication that rocked the British Empire in 1936.
We follow Edward's younger days in World War One, his meeting up with Freda Dudley-Ward, the wife of a senior MP, and his regular arguments with his mother Queen Mary and his father George 5th . Then, following his rejection from Freda, and with war clouds looming over Europe, he seeks solace with American socialite, the married divorcee Wallis Simpson. This romance causes a huge stir, and, following the death of his father, Edward wrestles with his conscience and argues with Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin, who urges him to give up Wallis. Edward, however, was not to be talked out of his quest to marry Wallis.
Backed by Winston Churchill, and urged on by Lords Beaverbrook and Rothermere, Edward remains undeterred, but decides to abdicate rather than risk a constitutional crisis.
This epic play delves deeply into the background of these intriguing characters whose story still causes debate and controversy. A sure fire winner with audiences!
